How Films Can Change the Story in Real-time by Responding to Viewers’ Emotions

Most films offer exactly the same viewing experience. You sit down, the movie begins, the story unfolds, and you follow what’s happening on screen until the end of the story. It’s a linear experience. My new film Before We Disappear – about two climate activists seeking revenge on the corporations responsible for global warming. Aims to change that. What sets my film apart is that it adapts the story to the viewer’s emotional response. 카지노사이트

Through the use of a video camera and computer software, the film effectively observes viewers watching footage of climate catastrophes.

Viewers are indirectly asked to choose a side. I decided to use this technology to make a film about the climate crisis. To make people think about what they are willing to sacrifice to ensure their survival in the future. Storytelling has always been interactive: traditional oral storytellers interacted and reacted to the listeners. While, Filmmakers have been experimenting with interactivity for almost a century – the last decade has seen an explosion in interactive content.

Streaming services offer viewers the opportunity to choose their own adventure.

But allowing the viewer to take control of the plot has long been a challenge. It conflicts with narrative immersion. Here the action pauses to ask the user what to do next. Breaking the flow of the story and actively engaging the viewer. Resolving the disruption of the immersive experience remains a key issue for artists exploring interactive cinema. The films I make and direct take a different approach, using unconscious control to affect what the audience sees.

My previous brain-driven films, The Moment (2018) and The Disdvantages of Time Travel (2014), used brain-computer interfaces (BCI).

These systems use computers to analyze electrical signals from the brain. While allowing people to effectively control the device with their minds. Using brain data, viewers create an unconscious montage of the film in real-time. Amplifying the individual stories of the sci-fi dystopia and the films’ wandering, dreamy spirit. 온라인카지노사이트

Narrative Control

Before he disappears, he uses an ordinary computer video camera to read emotional cues and direct the film’s editing in real time. For this to work, we needed to fully understand how people react to video.

We examined the emotions filmmakers seek to evoke and how viewers visually represent emotions while watching. Using machine vision and machine learning techniques from our partner BlueSkeye AI. We analyzed viewers’ facial emotions and reactions to footage. And developed several algorithms to use this data to drive the narrative.

While we’ve found that viewers typically don’t show many emotions when watching a video, BlueSkeye’s facial and emotion analysis tools are sensitive enough to detect enough small changes and emotional cues to tailor the video to viewer reactions.

The analytics software measures facial muscle movements and levels of emotional arousal, essentially how the viewer is feeling emotionally at a given moment. However, the software also assesses whether an emotion is positive or negative, which we call “valence”.

An Emotional Journey

I see interactive technology as a way to expand the director’s toolbox. Tell more of the story and allow the film to adapt to the individual viewer. Challenging and distributing the director’s power. However, emotional responses can be abused or have unintended consequences.

It is not difficult to imagine an online system that only displays content that evokes positive emotions in the user. This can be used to create an echo chamber where people only see content that suits their preferences. Nor it can be used for propaganda purposes. We saw in the Cambridge Analytica scandal how huge amounts of personal data were collected by Facebook and used for political advertising.

Big Business, Big Responsibility

Unconscious Interaction is Big Business. Platforms like TikTok and YouTube use analysis of previous user interactions on the platforms. Which is to influence the new content they see there. Users do not always know what personal information is being created or stored. Nor can they influence the algorithms that present it to them. It is important to create a system in which recipient data is not stored.

The data from the video or the viewer’s facial expression. May not be downloading or analyzing outside of the player. We plan to make the video available as an interactive application. Being aware of the possible misuse of user data and protecting all personal data on the device. 바카라사이트
